Description

Sonair ADAR One – safety-certified 3D ultrasonic sensor

According to the manufacturer, the ADAR One is the world’s first safety-certified 3D ultrasonic sensor for human-robot collaboration. Instead of scanning a single plane like a conventional safety laser scanner, it monitors a complete volume of 180° × 180° at ranges up to 4 m – including everything above, below and in between the conventional scan plane.

It is based on PMUTs, piezoelectric ultrasonic transducers in MEMS technology, combined with digital beamforming on a quad-core ARM SoC. Because the sensor works with sound instead of light, it also functions in darkness, dust and backlight and detects glass as well as reflective and low-contrast surfaces where optical sensors fail. There are no moving parts: the ultrasonic array is fixed.

Your advantages at a glance

  • Certified safety: SIL 2 to IEC 61508 and PL d to EN ISO 13849, EC type-examination certificate from exida
  • Volume instead of plane: the 180° × 180° field of view also captures low and overhanging obstacles
  • Independent of light: reliable in darkness, dust and backlight as well as on glass and reflective surfaces
  • 128 zone presets: three simultaneously monitored zones per preset, switchable via eleven safe inputs
  • Compact and efficient: 104 × 54 × 25 mm, 200 g, maximum 5 W
  • Several sensors side by side: no crosstalk where detection ranges overlap
  • ROS 2-ready: 3D point cloud over Ethernet in addition to the safe OSSD output

Typical applications

  • Autonomous mobile robots in warehousing, production, logistics, retail and hospitals
  • Machine safety at robot cells, palletisers, CNC machine tending and packaging lines
  • Redundant safety layer alongside LiDAR and cameras – sound instead of light closes perception gaps
  • Adding vertical awareness and close-range detection
  • Compact robot platforms with limited space and energy budget
